Ingredient Studies vs Finished Supplements: Why the Difference Matters

The Evidence-Distance Problem

A product can contain a scientifically studied ingredient without being the same intervention that researchers tested. The farther the commercial product is from the study intervention, the more cautious the conclusion should be.

A Practical Evidence Ladder

• Human trial of the exact finished product
• Human trial of a closely comparable formulation
• Same ingredient, similar preparation and dose
• Same ingredient but materially different dose/preparation
• Observational evidence
• Animal or laboratory evidence
• Anecdotes and testimonials
• Seller marketing without supporting evidence

Questions to Ask

• Is it the same ingredient species and plant part?
• Is it the same extract or standardization?
• Is the dose comparable?
• Was the population similar?
• Was the same outcome measured?
• Was the finished combination tested?

NeuroVera Example

NeuroVera reports 100 mg Bacopa, while many Bacopa trials used roughly 300–450 mg/day of specific extracts. Its 500 mg Lion’s Mane component also differs from gram-level material used in some human research. The DHA label wording and amount differ even more from many DHA trials.

Those gaps do not prove the product cannot work. They mean the ingredient studies should not be described as direct clinical proof of the finished formula.
